  • 95th anniversary of the Harlem Globetrotters’ first game on January 7, 1927
  • 130th anniversary of the deadliest mine explosion in Oklahoma history on January 7, 1892.  The explosion killed 100 miners.
  • 155th anniversary of African-American men gaining the right to vote in the District of Columbia on January 8, 1867
  • 90th anniversary of the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate on January 12, 1932.  Hattie Ophelia Wyatt Caraway from Arkansas was elected to fill the seat left vacant by the death of her husband.
  • 80th anniversary of Presidential Proclamation No. 2537, issued on January 14, 1942, which required aliens from World War II enemy countries—Italy, Germany, and Japan—to register with the United States Department of Justice.  They were then issued a Certificate of Identification for Aliens of Enemy Nationality. Unfortunately, the proclamation also facilitated the internment of Americans of Japanese ancestry the following month.

  • 80th anniversary of U.S. troops surrendering in Bataan on April 9, 1942.  The largest surrender in U.S. history.
  • 80th anniversary of the Bataan Death March on April 10, 1942. Over 75,000 Filipino and American troops began a forced march.
  • 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball on April 15, 1947.
